The Midwestern Table
27 October 2019
This set has very tall feet.
Normally, the clay that touches the table is quite discreet. From the shadows it goes about its humble, stabilizing work. But for the Midwestern set it seemed right to celebrate this overlooked essential.
The roots of this part of the country are more rural than urban. In Goshen, Indiana, Grandma Bornman bakes round bread loaves in old metal Crisco jars, kneading each batch of dough 600 times and making bread pudding of the leftovers. Gardeners can their produce, and older folk reminisce about Sunday dinners with the family.
It’s unpretentious, the stuff of daily life—and also rich with a beauty of its own.
